My Last Day of Work is Tomorrow!

I don’t mean to rub it in by keep bringing it up, but my last day of work at my job is tomorrow!  I’m VERY excited!  On Monday, will be my first day to not have a “real job” in the past 10 years or so.

All I can say is that I am very pleased with the way everything has worked out.  I was able to build my business on the side and continue to work full-time until my income has become large enough to support my family.  As I posted last week, my income last month from Google Adsense was the highest it has ever been.  The month of March appears to be even better so far.

Right now, I don’t have any useful tips or tricks to share; however, I thought you might be interested in seeing the office I am giving up to work from home.  I am giving up a VERY large office and will be moving to a very small work area in my home.  These pictures will make it look like a step down, but I wouldn’t have it any other way at this point.

Current office at my “day job”

Now here are some pictures of my work space at home.  Its really just my desk, chair, and computer in a space in my master bedroom.  However, I can always lock the door during the day so my kids won’t hassle me too much.  Really its a decent setup and has everything that I need to build niche websites and my internet company.

New Workspace at Home

Anyway, I think I will make another post on Monday to discuss some of my future projects here (i.e. my new blog).  I expect to launch it by the end of the month.  I will leak a few more details in a few days!

Anyway, please feel free to comment below if you so choose!

  1. Guess what? The new small office will seem bigger than your former office because you won’t have a boss in there.
The sense of freedom knows no walls.
    Congrats again.

    • I think you are right, not having a boss will make things seem much better! (Although since I will be my own boss, I can never escape either!)

      • That means you will need to stay motivated.

        • Wow must be awesome to have so much time to do your own projects, you should do a 1000-site-challenge-in-a-month!!

Good stuff Spencer, really excited for you!

          • Thanks David…I appreciate it! I doubt I will be doing any 1000/mth challenge; but hey I guess I’m free to do whatever I want now!

            • 2000 site/month maybe? :) just kidding.

I’ve been executing your formula non stop for the last month. So far I’m up to 25 m.n.sites. The day I quit my job I hope to fly over to the US and buy you a drink!

  2. Congrats Spence!

You Must be thrilled to finally get rid of that J.O.B =-D

Great looking home office by the way! That’s where the magic happens haha.

  3. Nice little setup you have there Spencer. Looks like you have a little empty space on that desk of yours, I would suggest filling it up with a second monitor.

When I switched to dual monitors about a year ago or so, I was amazed at the increase in productivity! I usually have my email accounts and other, regularly updating accounts open on one monitor and do all of my day to day work on the other one. It kind of gives me more screen real estate and I can scan messages etc. without interruption of what I am doing, plus it just looks cooler! lol

If you are running Windows 7, it is configured for dual monitor configurations, all you have to do is plug in another monitor and configure it.

    Have fun at home!

    • Hey Patric, I think you are right! I would probably enjoy having the dual monitors and they would certainly fit. I had dual monitors once upon a time at a previous job; however, not since then. I also do run Windows 7 right now, so that would be easy…I will have to consider it! Thanks,

    • Oh dear! Dual monitors return my memory to the days when I was working in a bank department of stock market… that was awuful – all these currency trends, derivatives, crazy stuff…

I love my 10.1″ netbook now, connected to a 17″ monitor and that’s it =)

  4. Hi Spencer!

Cool monitor.. Btw your old office looks like you were the boss, really )

Well, being your own boss isn’t so easy as it may seem, might be even harder, so good luck, looking forward to your next posts!

    Best,

    Anton

    • Yeah, the old office was pretty big…I really didn’t need that much space, but whatever! Yes, being my own boss will be tough because I know what I should be able to accomplish…

  5. How the heck do manage with only ONE monitor!? It’s been proven to help productivity with at least two….you can get one for under $150 easily (22″).

    • US guyes a lucky – you really have really CHEAP electonics – I’ve recently been at Amazon looking for new netbook, and found that TImeline 1830T Core i7 + 500GB HDD costs the same as i3 + 360 Gb HDD here in Russia, Macs are also a LOT cheaper in the US. Ehh…

      • Эй Антон так ты из России и интересуешься маркетингом на американском рынке?

Почему американским именно а не русским?

    • Hey Gabe, I guess I just don’t know what I am missing!

  6. Spencer,

This is your blog and you have every right to be stoked! Congrats! …by the way, I wish my home office was as neat as yours. Between my pooch sleeping/snoring right next to me and tons of memorabilia on my desk — and the latest episode of NCIS Los Angeles or Desperate Housewives playing to the left of me, it is a wonder how I get things done! lol

Cheers to such a big move and I’ll be tuning in for next week’s post.

    – Yolanda

    • Yolanda…thanks! We will see how “neat” I can keep my desk/office clean over the long term. Luckily the TV and everything else in the house is downstairs so once my door is locked there shouldn’t be any distractions (that I don’t create on my own).

  7. $7000 + through adsense.. how do you manage to do that

it’s simply jaw dropping.. i would love to hear which websites you run.. and what are ur strategies…

I would love it if you could mentor me as well?

    • Sandeep:

I am sometimes amazed myself at the earnings I see coming in. Its been alot of hard work over the past few years, certainly not an overnight success. I discussed a few posts ago that I have decided to NOT do any coaching or release any future products on niche websites…you can read that to see my reasons why.

  8. Must say.. lucky you.. getting off your day job and doing what you love to do is the best thing ever that can happen to anyone… i wish you more success and exponential growth

    Cheers
    Sandeep

  9. Hi Spencer

Congratulations on making the BIG STEP!

I wish you the best of success and anything we can do to help each other, just holler out and lets DO IT!

Hopefully I’ll be doing this exact same thing — kicking the “salary habit” — in a year’s time. If I really am successful it will happen earlier :)

    –Joe

    • Joe…thank you! Who knows, I may be interesting in collaborating on things in the future…let me know if you have any good ideas!

Best of luck in your ventures as well.

      Spencer

  10. What an awesome feeling, I’m sure! I like the home office much better! :) Congrats!

    • Lisa, it does feel pretty good. I think it will really hit me on Monday when I wake up and don’t have to go into work!

  11. Congratulations Spencer!

I remember my last day at work and it was just amazing when I walked out of the door for the last time.
That was October 2001 and I can honestly say that I have never rergretted it, not even for a single second. Even though it meant less money for me at the time there benefits were so great that I didn’t care.
    Best wishes for the future,
    Pauline

    • Pauline thats great to hear that you have be able to work for yourself since 2001. I certainly hope that I am able to work for myself for the next 10 years and beyond!

  12. Spencer what your internet company will be about?

  13. Hey Spencer, it’s not your workspace, it’s your empire!
    Good Luck.

  14. Wow, I am extremely happy for you and this gives me great motivation to keep on chugging along and putting in the work. I hope to be able to make the same type of announcement! If my plan works out, it will be at the end of this year.

  15. Congrats. I also quit my job in 2002 due to health reasons and since then I have been working from home. I worked for around 2 years as a computer faculty and I had lot of students. I now lost contact with most of them.

I now sometimes feel that I am alone at home.

I think you will also feel this after some time. Anyway best of luck.

  16. Congrats! Your home office looks a little depressing though perhaps you could open the curtains. 😉

  17. Just found your site and had to leave a congratulations based on the first post I saw! I came at a good time I see. :)

  18. great man.. u took the decision that i couldn’t for the last two years!!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. Phil Clark says:

Hey Spencer, congrats on leaving the rat race. One suggestion about your home office though: if you have the space, I highly recommend moving it out of the bedroom.

First, because, for achieving optimal sleep and, you might discover, optimal productivity, it’s best to keep your work and bed separate.

Second, because when working at home it’s a good idea to have established boundaries for your family/friends. It’s hard to tell when someone is working if they don’t have an established work space, or if that space is shared with the bedroom.

    Best of luck to you!

    • Phil, probably a great suggestion. We’ll see how it goes. For now my desk is best situated where it is. With time, I may actually build an office space separate from the house in the back of the house. If nothing else, I will have to put a sign on my door that says “At Work” or something similar.

  20. Hi Spencer,

Congrats to this great milestone! I have to admit I really like your office setup at your old job. My goal is to one day have something like that setup as my home office. Right now I’m working like you from home, but a nice big home office would certainly help with productivity I think. :-)
