Day 12: Waiting on Google

I wanted to give a quick update of how many websites I have built, etc.  Sites that are actually up and running, I now have 27.  However, just yesterday, I got all the completed articles for 13 more sites.  So, these will actually be built by the end of the day today or tomorrow.  So, I will have 40 sites very shortly.

In addition, I should get completed articles for another 12 or 13 sites today or tomorrow.  So, I should be very close to getting 50 sites built by the half way mark of my challenge (which is on Wednesday).

I also have a total of 63 domains purchased, so I have found enough keywords to take me well beyond the half way mark.

On Wednesday, which will officially be 2 weeks into this challenge, I am going to be posting my earnings update.  And then I will post my earnings every week thereafter, at least for a while.

So far the earnings have not been very exciting, I have to admit.  The reason is quite simple.  Sometimes you hit a homerun with a website that ranks in the top 5 right away with no backlinks.  And sometimes (usually) your website ranks on the 2nd or 3rd page of Google, and it can take 2 or 3 months or more to climb into the top 10.

So, that is what I am experiencing these first 2 weeks.  I haven’t hit any home runs yet, so I am left waiting on Google to rank my sites as I do more back linking.

Overall, this is really to be expected.  Its always nice to have your site rank well right away, but it can’t be counted on.

In fact, with some of my first niche adsense sites ever built, they did not rank even in the top 50 for my chosen keywords for at least 4 or 5 months.  And now they are in the top 10.

So, if you are looking for a get rich quick game, this is not for you.  Building a business of small websites takes patience and the ability to work consistently at the beginning without much reward (money).

So, while I currently have lots of sites ranking on the 2nd page of Google, I may have to be patient for a couple of months before I really see the fruits of my labor.

Anyway, if you are out there building niche sites and are disappointed that your sites are taking a long time to rank well in Google just realize that this is the norm.  Everyone likes to talk about the home runs, which ARE very possible, but they are more of an exception than the rule.

Anyway, post your thoughts and let me know what you think!

  1. Good post Spencer,

This applies to me a lot. I keep checking on the two sites I’ve made instead of focusing on putting up my next 2-3 sites 😛

I guess the message in this post is keep working, don’t worry too much about the stats at the beginning.

I do have one question and it’s regarding the keywords you target:

Do you ever go for long tail keywords? 3 words or more? And with these current sites you’re working on for this challenge, have you bought at least 1 domain that wasn’t available as exact match? At times it’s tempting to go for the keyword with a dash separating the words.

Looking forward to your earnings update 😛 Even if it’s low, it’s still earnings which should be going up with time.

  2. I tend to do best with domains that are 2 or 3 words in length. My domains that are 4 or 5 words in length do not tend to do as well for whatever reason. This may just be me, but this is what I have noticed.

Also, I have only purchased exact match domains for this challenge so far, and I think I will make…if I dont run out of time! There really is almost a never ending supply of great exact match domains out there, you just have to look. However, if you find a great keyword, it might be worth buying a non-exact match. Hope that helps!

  3. That makes me feel better. I’ve made 15 sites starting right around the time you did. So far, I’ve seen little return. But with little more than time invested, I’m patiently optimistic.

Spencer, you are right about the huge supply of good keyword domains out there. I have been really surprised with my research thus far. Given time, I can see the light (way down) the end of the tunnel. Good luck on your end. Can’t wait to see those earnings.

    • There is really almost an endless supply of keywords out there, and there are constantly new markets and keywords being created.
