Hey there, my name is Spencer.

I’m just a regular guy with a passion for online businesses!  My other passions include my wife and 3 children, running, raquetball, and a few other things.  However, the focus of this blog is of course internet marketing.

Just in case anyone is is interested in a little bit of my background, how I got into creating websites, and some of my professional pursuits…then read on!

My College Days

Back when I was deciding what to major in in college was just at the same time as the dot com boom.  I was fascinated by the frenzy over these stocks that was caused in the market, and I was also interested in this new form of online business.  At about this same time (in 1999), my Dad started a civil engineering firm; and this just solidified my interest in business and the stock market.

Because of these influences, I graduated in Business Management with an emphasis in Finance (from BYU).  I took my a job at Merrill Lynch where I was part of a team of advisors (I was really just a peon there).  This team managed HUGE clients…in fact the minimum investible assets required to have that team manage your money was $10 million.

After a couple of years, I went on to ASU and got my MBA.  It was during this time of graduate school (2005 to 2007) that I really started to get interested in internet marketing.  In fact, I started to learn some html and built a couple of little sites.  During my second year, I also entered a business plan competition and took first place in my class for an online business that I had come up with.

I never actually ended up starting that business simply due to the fact that I didn’t have the money or time to invest in it (and I wasn’t prepared to start raising capital for it).  So, instead I landed a nice full time job where I still am – working at a large financial institution in Business Banking.

My Internet Business

After I graduated in 2007 is when I really started trying to start a business online.  I created a personal finance blog that had some great info on it, and I had high hopes for it; but I really didn’t know how to market the site or keep the traffic that I got.  So, it died out; however, I did make some money (not much)…and it had me hooked!

I struggled to ever really rank well for any of my websites because I didn’t ever do much keyword research and was just targeting markets that were much too competitive.

Finally, the light bulb went on for me.  I decided to targeted long tail keywords with very low competition.  My first couple of sites, using this strategy, started making me $20 per month in passive income.  Whether I did anything or not, these sites continued to earn.

Quitting My Job

So, after seeing these results, I went on to build hundreds of websites until my income got to the point where I was making more than the average household salary in the US, just from these sites!

I am at the point now (Oct. 2010), where I am about to quit my full time job so that I can pursue my internet business on a full time business.

My goal of this blog is to be as open and honest as I can about my business and to share with you what I learn along the way.  I hope that you can take some of the advice I share here and apply it to your own business.

If you want to contact me, please feel free! I have created this blog for YOU, not for me; so I’m more than happy to interact with you and answer your questions as I have time.

  2. My background and education are very similar to yours. I graduated from Business admin. in 2001, have worked as an accountant in some corporates, etc.. Of course there are some differences between my and your stories; I am from Europe where English is not spoken, I haven’t married yet and unfortunately I couldn’t be successful in the internet marketing like you. Nice to see a person who has a similar life story like me.

  3. Wow, great work Spencer! I have a similar goal as yours but I have yet to reach the level you have achieved. I have actually already quit my day job last Oct 10 2009 but am not yet as successful as you are. Reading your blog has given me more inspiration so more power to you!

  4. I am also trying to build my business online. I am working on two models, a service oriented and a passive one. Currently not any major break trough.

Reading stories likes of you motivate my and help me believe that I can do it too.
